I completely agree with you. Esperanto is enjoyable for many people to learn and isn't harming anyone or anything. I absolutely don't understand why people attack it or those who learn it. There is nothing wrong with learning any language, whether it is widely used or not, there is more to language than number of people who speak it. Also, I don't believe any language should "displace" all other languages as Danny said. I support anyone who wants to learn any language. There isn't anything negative about learning a language! (Also Danny, you don't think it will last 2 decades? It has already lasted over a hundred years. It takes a good language to stay as strong as this one has.)

Anyways, ramble ramble. I am new to Esperanto but thoroughly enjoy it (and has actually been more useful to me than Spanish haha) I enjoy your blog and find it good practice to read, so keep it up!

Why do some people have such a problem with Esperanto as a hobby?

It's basically the same as if, when discovering that you like to play the piano, I was to start going off on how guitar is so much better, and why don't you learn to play the guitar instead because more people play the guitar than play the piano, guitars are more portable than pianos, and blah blah blah...

It isn't a contest. I'm glad you like English. I like English too - it's my native language. But what's wrong with people having fun with Esperanto? What's it to you? :-)

When people speak to you in English, it is because they want your money. When people speak to you in Esperanto, it is because they want your friendship.

Has it crossed your mind that some people like me simply love English, and that's why they study it?
Therefore, not only I study English because it's so wide-spread and in fact the sole dominant international language on Earth, but also because I find it the most affable language, particularly in its American variety.
I hope English displaces all other languages in the future.
As for Esperanto... Well, it's neither useful nor likable. Who would ever want to study it?! Come on, you don't have a slightest chance to survive in a couple of decades from now.

Dankon! I am bookmarking your blog and plan to return as I learn Esperanto. I have just started the FEC and am also doing some courses on lernu.net. I look forward to reading more of your site.
